Book Recommendations

Posted on

I’m not going to pretend that I didn’t steal this post idea from Sometimes Sweet, but it seemed so obvious when I saw hers.

It’s cold outside (oh, so cold!) and dark by four o’clock; it’s the perfect time of year to curl up under a blanket with a good book. I thought I would share ten of my favourites with you:

In no particular order, we have:

The Child Garden by Geoff Ryman. Look how battered that spine is! I’ve loaned this to so many of my friends (and panicked until I got it back). All about the importance of music and beauty and love.

Going Out by Scarlett Thomas. This is my favourite author, and while her later books are more intricate and intriguing this deceptively simple tale was the first I read and so is the dearest to me.

Sunnyside by Glen David Gold. I wasn’t sure about this when I bought it, but I loved it – rather bizarre and full of film history.

Out Stealing Horses by Per Petterson. Beautiful.

The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood. A classic.

Woman on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown by Lorna Martin. Not because it’s well written – although it is – but because it’s so honest. It could ring true for a lot of basically successful young women who occasionally feel a bit blue… but don’t want to make a big deal out of their crying fits, thanks.

What Was Lost by Catherine O’Flynn. One for those of us who used to be (or still are) record/book/video store slackers.

If Nobody Speaks of Remarkable Things by Jon McGregor. Wow.

The Vanishing Act of Esme Lennox by Maggie O’Farrell. Combines vintage clothing, family secrets and Edinburgh – three of my favourite things.

Flicker by Theodore Roszak. I used to be a projectionist so I have a soft spot for any book which goes on about films and projectors!

Which are your favourite books? I’m always looking for recommendations of things to read!

Birthday Wish List

Posted on

It’s one month yesterday until my birthday – squeeeeeeeeee! Both my sister and my boyfriend have been asking for up to date wish lists, so I thought I’d highlight a handful of things I like:

(click on the images to take you to the shops)

  • A new mobile phone. Yeah, I’m getting the expensive gift out of the way first. But, really, one I can obssess over my emails on and which doesn’t switch itself off at random times would be nice. I’m not getting my hopes up!!! 🙂
  • A complete letterpress alphabet. Yes, it’s a cliche.
    or a lovely little word…
  • Some of Tickette’s doodle jewellery. How cute?!
  • One of Theaterclouds’s boat prints. I love the hand shadow ones, too, mind you…
  • This cushion because there were scraps of this exact same fabric in my mum’s sewing box when I was little and I loved playing with them. Even if it does remind me a bit of Monopoly.
  • Another sewing book to never use, just because it’s retro:
  • Countless pretty vintage dresses and knick-knacks which I don’t know exist yet. Surprises make the best presents!
  • This print from Tea and Ceremony:
  • Too many books to mention, but with an emphasis on big, shiny hardbacks full of very pretty pictures and good ideas!
  • Swarms of kittens.
  • Another cup of tea.
